Simple Steps to Fire Preparedness

During National Preparedness Month of October, the American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids encourages you to follow these simple steps to fire preparedness. Home fires are not only the most common disaster that the Red Cross responds to, but also the most preventable. Each week, you’ll find two to four instructions to help prevent fires and increase preparedness in your home by taking one step at a time.

Here are today’s facts!

  • Identify two ways to escape from every room in the home.
  • Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.
  • Select a safe location away from the home where your family can meet after escaping.
  • Consider purchasing and storing escape ladders for rooms above ground level and make sure to learn how to use them.

Our lives are busy and our days are hectic. Breaking up a fire plan into gradual, manageable steps makes fire safety and prevention easy to do. Visit the Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids and our National Site for more information!
