Remembering the Red Cross During WWI

Much of the Red Cross history is military. Whether it was Clara Barton soothing dying soldiers during the Civil War or Red Cross workers connecting military members and their families today, the Armed Forces and the Red Cross have historically worked closely.

I came across these photos in a collection by early 1900s French photographer, Albert Kahn. Using autochrome plates, he took some of the first versions of color photographs. He traveled around the world, gathering photos of places and people, and ultimately took photos during World War I, as it ravaged his home country of France. See the Red Cross nurses below and the comfort they were able to provide during such harrowing destruction.
