This morning, we waved goodbye to 17 Red Cross AmeriCorps from around the state as they revved their engines and headed out to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. AmeriCorps members from the Grand Rapids, Bay City, Muskegon, and Lansing Red Cross chapters piled into 5 vans and hit the road to celebrate National AmeriCorps Week.
This week-long service project will focus on flood recovery after last summer’s devastating flooding. Our team will work with another AmeriCorps VISTA team in Cedar Rapids, working to help restore Usher’s Ferry, a historic village just outside Cedar Rapids. They will be laying brick, framing, and generally helping to spruce the place up. We even hear whispers that they get to visit the “Field of Dreams!” (Which has nothing to do with flood recovery, but is a fun perk all the same!)
Our group will be Tweeting from on the road, as well as sending back stories, photos, and video from their adventures! Keep an eye out! Also, thanks to WZZM 13 for coming out and covering our team’s wonderful work!
Wave goodbye to our AmeriCorps! Have fun! (And go here for more photos!)
